June 1, 2025 - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials report Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau investigators responded to the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue in the city of
Baldwin Park to assist the Baldwin Park Police Department with an officer-involved shooting investigation. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at approximately 7:12 p.m., Baldwin Park Police Department officers responded to a report of a man armed with a firearm. There was also a report of a person lying on the sidewalk, unresponsive.
As officers arrived on scene, they were immediately fired upon by the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred. Two Baldwin Park Police Department officers were injured by the gunfire. Both injured officers were transported to a local hospital, where Officer Samuel Riveros tragically succumbed to his injury. The second officer, Officer Anthony Pimentel, was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.
The suspect, a male adult, was struck by gunfire at the location. He was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition.
Officers located a civilian adult male adult suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was also transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His identity is being withheld pending a next of kin notification.
The suspect’s rifle was recovered at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau assumed investigative responsibility and is working closely with the Baldwin Park Police Department. The investigation remains in its early stages, and there is no additional information available at this time.
This is a heartbreaking and deeply devastating tragedy. Officer Riveros made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community. He, along with Officer Pimentel and their fellow officers, bravely responded to a dangerous call, fully aware of the risks involved. Officer Riveros gave his life in service to others, a profound testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and selfless courage.
His loss is profoundly felt—not only by his family and colleagues, but by the entire Baldwin Park community and law enforcement family.
The death of an innocent civilian only deepens this tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victim’s loved ones as they endure unimaginable grief.
