August 27, 2026 – Mariposa County Health & Human Services officials offer advice on how to deal with ticks.
Find a tick? Here’s a guide on how to remove ticks and what to do next:
- Find a clean pair of tweezers to remove the tick. You can use your fingers if there are no tweezers available.
- Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
- Remove the tick with slow, steady pressure without twisting or jerking.
- Dispose the tick by placing it in a sealed container and disposing it in the trash. If possible, contact your provider for testing.
- Thoroughly wash the bite area with soap and water after removal.
- For the next 30 days, monitor the bite area and contact your doctor if you develop a rash or experience any flu-like symptoms including fever, headaches, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, muscle pain or lack of appetite.
