August 27, 2026 – Mariposa County Health & Human Services officials offer advice on how to deal with ticks.

Find a tick? Here’s a guide on how to remove ticks and what to do next:

1. Find a clean pair of tweezers to remove the tick. You can use your fingers if there are no tweezers available.
2. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
3. Remove the tick with slow, steady pressure without twisting or jerking.
4. Dispose the tick by placing it in a sealed container and disposing it in the trash. If possible, contact your provider for testing.
5. Thoroughly wash the bite area with soap and water after removal.
6. For the next 30 days, monitor the bite area and contact your doctor if you develop a rash or experience any flu-like symptoms including fever, headaches, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, muscle pain or lack of appetite.
