2018 Storytelling AdFebruary 13, 2018 - Have you marked your calendars for Mariposa’s Traditional Weekend of Storytelling on the second weekend in March?  Busy practicing your “DIRT” Themed Story for the Story Slam! Competition, Friday, March 9? Made plans to attend the Storytelling Family Concert on Saturday, March 10?

Produced by the Keeping Storytelling in Mariposa Schools SIG, the Story Slam! Competition will take place at the United Methodist Church, at 6th Street and Bullion at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, March 9, 2018. Sign up to tell your five-minute story when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Family Concert performances will be in the Parish Hall, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mariposa, at 7:00 p.m., on Saturday, March 10, 2018.

Dynamic Storytelling artist, Anne Rutherford, who appeared at the 2015 Storytelling Festival, and her husband, Norm Brecke, will be the featured storytellers at the SIG’s Family Concert. Local award-winning storyteller, Angela Heiss, will also be performing new and favorite tales with Anne and Norm.

Norm Brecke is a spirited storyteller who revels in telling a good story. His music, zeal, and humor are loved by all ages. He specializes in folktales he spices to make unique. His personal stories reflect his Northwest roots. Norm often brings music to his stories, accompanying himself on guitar, ukulele, banjo, or jaw harp.

With a background as a primary school teacher, Norm's rapport with young audiences is immediate and lasting. He has developed after school storytelling clubs, where he guides students to select, practice, peer coach and refine their story for public performance. He has also narrated for the Seattle Symphony, been a featured teller at the PowellsWood and Stone Soup Storytelling Festivals, and performed at the Seattle Art Museum, and the American Library Association National Conference.

Fliers containing the Story Slam! Rules, and Family Concert information can be seen below, and can also be found at the Mariposa County Library, and on the SIG’s Facebook page.
