JUly 19, 2021 - LOS ANGELES — A Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) participant who walked away from the community reentry facility in Los Angeles on Friday, July 15, 2021 was apprehended in Downtown Los Angeles on July 17 at approximately 2 p.m.

Special agents from California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Office of Correctional Safety (OCS)-Special Service Unit, with the assistance of the OCS-Fugitive Apprehension Team, Los Angeles were able to locate and successfully apprehend Bryant L. Jefferson, without incident.

Jefferson is in transport to the California Institution for Men and the case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of criminal charges.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on July 15, 2021 it was determined that Jefferson had departed the MCRP without authorization and an emergency search was initiated. Within minutes, agents from CDCR’s OCS were dispatched and notification was made to local law enforcement agencies.

Jefferson was admitted to CDCR from Los Angeles County on May 16, 2013 to serve fifteen years for two counts of second-degree robbery, both second strikes, with an enhancement for prior felony conviction of a serious offense. Jefferson had been housed in the MCRP since April 1, 2021.  He was scheduled to be paroled May 21, 2022.

The MCRP allows eligible offenders committed to state prison to serve the end of their sentences in the reentry center and provides them the programs and tools necessary to transition from custody to the community. It is a voluntary program for male offenders who have approximately one year left to serve. The program links offenders to a range of community-based rehabilitative services that assist with substance use disorders, mental health care, medical care, employment, education, housing, family reunification and social support.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
