January 28, 2022 - LOS ANGELES — California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) agents apprehended Antonio Diaz on Thursday after he walked away from the Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) facility in Los Angeles on Jan. 26.

Agents from CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety followed investigative leads and at 7:40 p.m., arrested Diaz in Los Angeles without incident. He was transported to California Institution for Men in Chino. His case will be referred to a district attorney for possible escape charges.

Diaz, 32, was admitted from Los Angeles County on July 21, 2017, with a six-year, eight-month sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and evading or attempting to evade a peace officer while driving recklessly. He arrived at the MCRP on Sept. 13, 2021, and was scheduled to be released from CDCR custody in May 2022.

The MCRP allows eligible offenders committed to state prison to serve the end of their sentences in the re-entry center and provides them the programs and tools necessary to transition from custody to the community. It is a voluntary program for male offenders who have approximately two years left to serve. The program links offenders to a range of community-based rehabilitative services that assist with substance use disorders, mental health care, medical care, employment, education, housing, family reunification and social support.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
