January 8, 2023 – The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department reported on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 10:24 a.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station were flagged down by two witnesses San Bernardino County Sheriff logowho reported a male subject, who was involved in a minor traffic collision, exited his vehicle and was walking near the Sheriff’s Station.   

During an area check, deputies located the suspect, later identified as Eric Friesen, near Yucaipa City Hall, armed with a handgun.  Deputies gave Friesen several commands to drop the gun, but Friesen refused.  When Friesen pointed the gun at deputies, a lethal force encounter occurred, and Friesen was struck by gunfire.  Medical personnel, who was staged nearby, provided medical care and transported Friesen to a hospital where he remains in stable condition.

LOCATION:  34144 Yucaipa Boulevard, Yucaipa, CA 

SUSPECT(S):   Eric Friesen, 32-years-old, Resident of Yucaipa
