January 18, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, just before 5:00 p.m., San Diego Police Officers and Sheriff's Deputies were conducting follow-up at the 800 block of La Cresta Blvd. in unincorporated El Cajon. The follow-up was regarding a homicide that occurred in the City of San Diego. The suspect was a 77-year-old male. Officers coordinated with Sheriff’s Deputies to check the La Cresta address utilizing a Sheriff’s Helicopter. Shortly afterwards, the suspect was contacted by officers and deputies near his vehicle that was parked to the rear of the residence.  

When contacted, the suspect failed to comply with instructions prompting officers to deploy less lethal bean bag rounds, which had no effect. The suspect then reached for what appeared to be a shotgun from inside his vehicle. An officer involved shooting occurred involving two officers from the San Diego Police Department. Despite lifesaving efforts by paramedics, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility of the Officer Involved Shooting investigation. No officers or deputies were injured. The suspect has been identified, but his identity in not being released pending family notifications. There is Body Worn Camera footage of the incident.
