February 23, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials reported that on February 21, 2023, just before 9:30 p.m., Sheriff's Homicide san diego county sheriff department logoinvestigators were notified 67-year-old Robert Shuey, an individual in Sheriff's custody, was pronounced deceased. The Sheriff's Department is sympathetic to his family and those affected by this death.  A Sheriff's family liaison officer is working with Mr. Shuey's family. 

Mr. Shuey was arrested on February 20, 2023, by the Oceanside Police Department for 23153(A) VC – DUI drugs/alcohol causing bodily injury to any person other than driver. He was involved in a vehicle collision which resulted in serious injury to a lone motorcyclist. 

The Oceanside Police Department took Mr. Shuey for medical evaluation after his arrest and on February 21, 2023, just before 4:00 a.m. Mr. Shuey was cleared from the hospital and booked into the Vista Detention Facility. The same day, around 11:00 a.m., Mr. Shuey was taken to the San Diego Central Jail where he was housed.

Just before 8:00 p.m., during an hourly safety check, Mr. Shuey was found unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately responded to the location and began CPR. Paramedics arrived and took over life saving measures. Despite these efforts, Mr. Shuey was pronounced deceased before he could be transported to a hospital.

As a matter of practice, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit investigates all deaths of persons in custody at the time of their passing. The Medical Examiner's Office has been notified of the death. The cause and manner of death are under investigation.                    

The Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) Executive Officer was notified of this incident.
