Smuggling Drugs Into Jail

September 12, 2023 – San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials report that a North County woman has been arrested on suspicion of mailing a drug-laced letter to a county jail.

On August 23, deputies assigned to the Sheriff's Mail Processing Center (MPC) intercepted a letter intended for an individual in a detention facility. They noticed the letter had the appearance of being soaked in an unknown liquid that had already dried.

Deputies tested the letter and discovered it had been soaked in liquid methamphetamine. The letter was then seized as evidence.

The Sheriff's Detention Investigations Unit (DIU) began a criminal investigation and found out Misty Vantine (DOB 02/19/1978) was responsible for mailing the letter containing methamphetamine to a county jail.

On Friday, September 8, detectives located and arrested Vantine in the parking lot of the George Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa.

During the arrest, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia was found inside Vantine's vehicle. She was booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility on several charges, including bringing drugs into a jail, trying to sell a controlled substance to an individual in custody and conspiracy to commit a crime.
