September 28, 2023 – Ventura County Sheriff's Office officials report that a local Thousand Oaks resident was hiking in the open space located between the Arroyo Conejo Nature Preserve and the 1900 block of Roadrunner Avenue in Thousand Oaks, when he found skeletal remains in the ravine.
Deputies from the Thousand Oaks Patrol Station responded to the scene and located the skeletal remains. Personnel from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, Forensic Services Bureau, and the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene to investigate, and later confirmed the remains were that of a decomposed human. Due to the level of decomposition, the decedent could not be identified.
Several units have assisted in this investigation including members of the Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Unit, and the Thousand Oaks Directed Enforcement Unit (DEU) Vulnerable Population Officers.
Detectives are making efforts to identify the decedent. The manner and cause of death remains unknown, pending an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
