October 26, 2023 - Placer County Sheriff's Office officials report that after months of investigating a theft series in Colfax, a PCSO deputy identified and arrested the pair responsible for the crimes.
In late August, a citizen from Colfax filed a report after they noticed items in their truck had been rearranged. Another citizen had filed a similar report in Colfax the night before. A deputy assigned to the Colfax station began investigating the reports and identified a vehicle associated with the attempted thefts. During the investigation, several unlocked vehicles in the Auburn, Colfax, and surrounding areas were tampered with and had items stolen. The investigating deputy identified the suspects behind the thefts as 73-year-old Donald Malone and 48-year-old Erin Lynch, both from Auburn. On October 6th, sheriff’s deputies and Auburn police officers served a search warrant at the pair’s apartment in Auburn and located suspected items related to the theft series inside their apartment. Both Lynch and Malone were arrested for tampering with a vehicle, theft by use of access card information, petty theft, conspiracy, and other related charges.
