Investigation Begins When an Inmate from the West Valley Detention Center Dies in Custody
December 17, 2023 - San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at about 2:00 a.m., an inmate at the West Valley Detention Center, identified as Gustavo Ramirez, was released from the hospital after he was transported the day prior for injuries sustained during a fall inside his cell. About an hour after being discharged, Ramirez was transported back to the hospital for further treatment and was admitted into the hospital. Ramirez suffered from multiple pre-existing health problems and his condition continued to worsen. He remained hospitalized over the next two weeks.
On Saturday, December 16, 2023, at about 1:00 a.m., Ramirez went into cardiac arrest at the hospital. Despite lifesaving measures, Ramirez was pronounced deceased at 1:47 a.m. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation.
Ramirez was arrested on May 21, 2018, by the Rialto Police Department for sexual assault related charges and remained in custody until his death.
