Sex Offender Compliance Sweep

December 19, 2023 - Nevada County District Attorney's Office officials report that on December 13, 2023, The Nevada County District Attorney’s Office Nevada County DAInvestigators Unit, in collaboration with the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, Grass Valley Police Department and the Nevada County Probation, completed a compliance check on numerous 290 registrants. Under Penal Code 290, California law requires people convicted of certain sex crimes to register as sex offenders. Sexual offenders are required to register in person with the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction where they reside. The registrants must also comply with other requirements, including updating their registration annually and informing law enforcement when any changes to their residence or other pertinent information have occurred.

Failure to keep law enforcement notified of an address change or registration information is a crime and can be punished as a felony or misdemeanor.

During the December 13th operation:

  • 2 felony arrests were made for out of compliance registrants.
  • 3 other individuals were brought back into compliance.
  • 1 probation arrest of an individual who was on pretrial release for a suspected 290 eligible crime and was in violation of the terms imposed by the Court.

The operation was a collaborative effort by local law enforcement to reduce violent sexual offenses in the county through proactive surveillance, to arrest habitual sexual offenders out of compliance, and strictly enforce state registration requirements for those who fall under Penal Code section 290.
