December 25, 2023 - San Bernardino Cave and Technical Rescue Team officials reported they successfully completed a technical confined space rescue near Point Loma in San Diego. An individual had been trapped in the rocks near the surf for more than a day. San Diego Fire, Chula Vista Fire, and San Diego Lifeguards worked all night in the rain to free him, but the rising surf hindered further attempts.
The Cave Team was requested to assist and freed the trapped man's legs by using micro blasting techniques. This involved delicate placement of charges in order to break and move rock without harming the subject. Once his legs were freed, he could be hauled up and out by Fire to a waiting ambulance.
The use of blasting for rescue is very rare and requires a significant amount of training to become proficient. The Cave Team is proud to provide this resource for the county and state. Great work to everyone involved who produced this successful outcome!
