Armed Man Injured in Deputy-Involved Shooting, Suspect in Custody
January 14, 2024 - Monterey County Sheriff’s Office officials report that at approximately 8:30 A.M. on Friday morning Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies were at a residence in the 200 block of Strawberry Canyon Road in Royal Oaks in connection with a criminal investigation. While at the location, deputies made contact with a male suspect who then barricaded himself inside a residence. Deputies with assistance from Mental Health Crisis Units negotiated with man to leave the residence peacefully.
At approximately 9:45 A.M., the man ultimately exited the residence, at which time the man, armed with a non-firearm weapon, attacked deputies who attempted to deploy less-lethal bean bag rounds. The less-lethal rounds proved ineffective, and it was at this time that two deputies discharged their service weapons, striking the man. Deputies immediately called for emergency medical response. The man was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Tina Nieto stated, “Anytime our deputies use force, it is a matter that the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office takes very seriously. We are determined to be as open with our community as possible and assist the independent investigation currently underway by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.”
Out of respect for the District Attorney’s investigation, the Sheriff’s Office cannot provide additional information on this incident. Further inquiries should be made with the District Attorney’s Office.
