Death Investigation in San Diego Central Jail 

January 18, 2024 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on January 16, 2024, around 2:30 p.m., Sheriff's Homicide investigators san diego county sheriff department logowere notified 24-year-old Brandon Andrew Yates, an individual in Sheriff's custody, passed away at the San Diego Central Jail. We extend our sympathies to the Yates family and those affected by this death. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one.

Mr. Yates was arrested on January 15, 2024, by the San Diego Police Department for 459 PC – Burglary. Mr. Yates had a residence in the city of San Diego at the time of his arrest.

On January 16, 2024, around 1:36 p.m., deputies were conducting a safety check and found Mr. Yates unresponsive and displaying signs of distress. Medical staff and deputies immediately began life saving measures including CPR, Naloxone and an AED. The paramedics arrived and assumed medical care. Despite these efforts, Mr. Yates was pronounced deceased at 2:14 p.m. by a hospital doctor.

The Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) representative was notified of this incident and responded to the scene.

As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

January 18, 2024 - San Bernardino Police Department officials report that in late December, our SBPD Narcotics Unit investigated an online narcotics seller based in the area. Officers then served an associated search warrant in the city of Grand Terrace.

During the search warrant, officers recovered a loaded firearm, ammunition, and various magazines. Officers also found the suspect was a convicted felon and known gang member. He was consequently arrested on felony charges.
