LASD, LAPD Headquarters, and Los Angeles Superior Court held a News Conference regarding Firearms Relinquishment Grant.
January 30, 2024 - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials report that Sheriff Robert G. Luna, along with Los Angeles Police Chief Michael Moore and Superior Court of Los Angeles County Presiding Judge Samantha P. Jessner, held a Press Conference to discuss a Multi-Agency Firearms Relinquishment Grant.
On January 20, 2023, Los Angeles was approved for funding under the Gun Violence Reduction Program Grant. This grant will allocate over $1.6 million to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).
The funding will be used to enforce Senate Bill 320, which requires the Court to order a restrained person to relinquish any firearms and/or ammunition and provide a receipt to the court.
This grant funding will be used to develop a portal for electronic notifications to law enforcement agencies regarding violations of firearm relinquishment orders. It is also intended to support court-based firearm relinquishment programs, ensuring the consistent and safe removal of firearms and ammunition from individuals who are prohibited from owning or possessing them, as per a court order.
In general, prohibited persons in the Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS) include individuals who were convicted of a felony or violent misdemeanor, were placed under a domestic violence or other restraining order, or suffer from serious mental illness.
The fundamental feature of the grant initiative is the implementation of a portal that will facilitate seamless collaboration among agencies, providing a centralized platform for timely information exchange. This multi-agency collaboration signifies a strong commitment to enhance public safety, promote responsible gun ownership, and build a stronger, more secure community for all.
