Death Investigation at San Diego Central Jail 

February 6, 2024 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on February 4, 2024, around 12:00 p.m., Sheriff's Homicide investigators were notified a 54-year-old male in Sheriff's custody, passed away at the San Diego Central Jail. The male's name is not being released at this time because we are actively trying to locate and notify his family. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one.

On February 4, 2024, around 10:00 a.m., a deputy and nurse were handing out medication to the housing module. When they contacted the male in his housing unit, they identified that he needed further medical evaluation. While being taken for that evaluation, the male became unresponsive and rescue efforts were immediately administered. Paramedics were called and responded, taking over immediate medical care.  While first responders provided lifesaving support, the male was transported to the hospital. Despite all efforts, he succumbed and unfortunately passed away despite all attempts to save him.

The male was taken into custody on June 26, 2023, on felony warrants. The warrants were stemming from an October 2021 arrest by the San Diego Police Department for Felony Vandalism. At the time of his arrest, the male was believed to be unsheltered.

The Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) representative was notified of this incident. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death.

As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.
