Update: Bicycle Accident in Encinitas
March 21, 2024 - San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials report that a man killed in a bicycle accident in Encinitas has been identified.
It happened on Sunday, March 17, just after midnight. Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station responded to a bicyclist down in the 2700 block of S. Coast Highway 101.
Deputies arrived and found a 48-year-old man and his bicycle in the northbound bike lane of S. Coast Highway 101. Deputies and paramedics attempted life saving measures, but the man unfortunately died from his injuries.
The bicyclist has been identified as 48-year-old Ryan Currie of Encinitas. An initial investigation has revealed Currie was riding northbound along the east side of S. Coast Highway in the protected bicycle lane on an Electra Townie bicycle.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department encourages bicyclists to utilize protective equipment, including helmets and reflective clothing while riding. We would also like to remind riders that proper lighting is required when riding at night.
Sheriff's Traffic Investigators are working to gather more information to determine the circumstances of the collision. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the North Coastal Sheriff's Station Traffic Division at (760) 966-3500.
