Update: SDPD OIS - 47th Street in San Diego

May 24, 2024 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on May 19, 2024, at about 10:20 p.m., The san diego county sheriff department logoSan Diego Police Department received a call from a reporting party, in the 400 block of 47th Street, stating her ex-boyfriend was at her front door, threatening to shoot through the door if the reporting party did not let him in. Fearing the suspect would shoot into her apartment, the reporting party let the suspect in. Once inside, the suspect pointed his gun at the reporting party and threatened to shoot her. The suspect then grabbed their 11-month-old daughter and walked out of the apartment.

San Diego Police Officers arrived on scene as the suspect was walking out of the apartment. When the suspect saw the officer, he fled on foot. The suspect ran through the apartment complex, through the trolley tracks, across the trolley station parking lot, and into an apartment complex in the 200 block of 47th Street.

Officers were checking the interior of the apartment complex when an officer located the suspect hiding inside a bush, prompting an officer involved shooting. The suspect was struck at least one time. Officers immediately began life saving measures until they were relieved by paramedics. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive his injuries. His name is being withheld at this time. It was later learned the suspect was holding his daughter during the officer involved shooting. The child was unharmed and was returned to her family.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Steffon Nutall of San Diego. Nutall was arrested for kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner, and willful cruelty to a child with the potential for great bodily injury or death. Any additional charges will be evaluated by the District Attorney's Office.

No officers were injured. The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Robert Gladysz. Officer Gladysz has been employed by San Diego Police Department for one and a half years.  He is currently assigned as a patrol officer from the Southeastern Division.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved-shooting investigation.  At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer’s discharge of his firearm.
