Hit and Run Traffic Collison 

May 28, 2024 – Riverside County Sheriff's Office officials report that on May 26, 2024, at 7:02 p.m., deputies from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station responded riverside county sheriff logoto the intersection of Butterfield Stage Road and Channel Street in Temecula regarding the report of a traffic collision. Prior to deputies’ arrival, a driver involved in the collision left the location on foot.

The Southwest Sheriff’s Station Traffic Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Preliminary findings revealed the vehicle traveling southbound on Butterfield Stage Road entered the intersection against a red signal, as the other vehicle entered the intersection on a green signal traveling westbound on Channel Street.  Witnesses provided deputies with the suspect’s direction of travel.  Deputies located and detained the suspect, who was identified as 36-year-old Matthew Thomas Jackson of Temecula. He was arrested for hit-and-run and driving under the influence and booked into Cois M. Byrd Detention Center.

The occupants of the other vehicle were transported to local area hospitals with moderate to serious injuries. This investigation is ongoing.

A temporary road closure of Butterfield Stage Road near Channel Street was necessary to process the scene and collect evidence.
