Update: Homicide-Vista
July 24, 2024 – San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials report that on July 20, 2024, at about 2:30 a.m., the San Diego Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a wireless 911 call from a cell phone near Civic Center Drive in Vista. Shortly thereafter, five males arrived at Palomar Hospital with four of the males suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries. The Medical Examiner's Office determined the preliminary results for cause of death to be a gunshot wound and the manner of death was a homicide.
The homicide victim has been positively identified as 19-year-old Antonio Junior Calderon Mendiola. Three other victims were also shot. A 17-year-old male juvenile and 18-year-old male are still in the Intensive Care Unit. A 16-year-old male juvenile is still hospitalized but in stable condition.
Sheriff's Homicide investigators are working to gather more information to determine the circumstances and motivation behind this death. The investigation is ongoing, and no suspect has been identified.
