August 27, 2024 – San Benito County Sheriff’s Office officials report that at around 12:17 p.m. on Monday, August 26th, 2024, we were dispatched to call of an adult male who was shot by an air rifle (or similar bb style type gun) during an altercation with two adults near the riverbed behind the high school. This location is 400-500 yards away from the high school, which was not the primary location of any related threats to this incident.
The two male adult suspects were identified on CCTV video footage provided by the high school, and our detectives are following up on those leads right now.
The victim suffered a superficial wound, was treated at the scene, and declined transportation to the hospital.
We believe the altercation was an isolated incident, and there are no known threats to the general public at this time.
We will follow up with more information as time allows.
UPDATE: Luis Huerta Fuentes, 22 years old, was identified as a suspect in the BB gun shooting that occurred in the San Benito riverbed earlier today. Fuentes was subsequently arrested and booked at the County Jail on the charges of assault with a deadly weapon and violation of probation. There is one person of interest who has yet to be identified.
