Attempted Disarming of a Court Deputy

September 21, 2024 – Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on September 18, 2024, about 9:20 a.m., Riverside County riverside county sheriff logoinmate, Joseph Bashor, a 20-year-old male from San Bernardino who was in custody for robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, was assigned to attend court in the Banning Justice Center. Bashor was wearing the appropriate restraints. Prior to his case being called and while inside the courtroom, Bashor became uncooperative with deputies and a physical altercation ensued. During the altercation, Bashor grabbed the deputy’s holstered firearm and attempted to disarm him. As a result of the altercation and to prevent his firearm from being taken by Bashor, the deputy utilized his knife and stabbed Bashor one time. Deputies were able to gain control of Bashor and prevent any further assault.

Medical aid was provided to Bashor and he was transported to a local hospital, where he received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Bashor was discharged from the hospital the same day and transported back to the Larry Smith Correctional Facility where he remains in custody. Additional charges will be filed with the District Attorney’s Office for attempting to disarm a peace officer.

The deputy involved was placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy. The name of the involved deputy will not be released. Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail responded and assumed the investigation. This is an active investigation, and no further information will be released at this time. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Riverside County District Attorney Investigator JR Ferrer or Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigator Jason Letterly at (951) 955-2777.
