Public Safety Awareness
September 29, 2024 – Lakewood Sheriff's Station officials report that Thursday morning several residents saw a male adult walking with a rifle in a commercial area located on Artesia Blvd. and Downey Avenue in Bellflower. A female resident driving by also flagged down a deputy in the area and told him about the man with the rifle. The deputy began to check the area and requested additional units which prompted a large law enforcement response including our air support. Moments later the deputies were directed towards a Smoke Shop in the Bellflower Town Center where they saw the suspect running into the business while holding the rifle. The suspect also attempted to hide from the deputies. The deputies were able to contact the suspect and detained him without incident.
During the investigation the deputies discovered that the rifle was not a firearm. The device instead was a water pellet gun that shoots water beads known as “orbeez”. The man was placed under arrest for misdemeanor 20170 (a) P.C. for openly displaying a fake firearm in a public place. The suspect’s actions were illegal, irresponsible, and brought fear and panic to the people in the commercial area that saw him walking with the rifle. The business owners were also shocked and feared the suspect was going to do harm as he ran into their business.
During the booking process the jail staff discovered the suspect, resident of Artesia, was on active probation for a previous robbery conviction. He remains in custody pending court and a probation hearing.
