SWAT Standoff in San Marcos

October 8, 2024 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials report that a man is under arrest following a nearly 11-hour SWAT standoff in San Marcos.

It happened on Monday, October 7 around 10:00 a.m. in the 2200 block of Flatiron Way as detectives with the San Marcos Sheriff's Station were following up on a domestic violence report.

The husband refused to speak with detectives and threatened to hurt himself and deputies. No one else was inside the apartment. As a precaution, nearly ten units in the apartment complex were evacuated.

The Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) and Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) were called to assist with the incident. The Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) was also on scene.

Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by contacting the man several times to reach a peaceful resolution, but he did not respond. At around 9:00 p.m., Sheriff's SED/SWAT used a chemical agent to enter the apartment.

Jeremiah Gowdy (44) was arrested without incident and was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. He will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of felony domestic violence and violating an emergency protective order.

Deputies obtained a warrant to search the home and seized rifles and handguns. The wife and children were provided domestic violence resources. It is the policy of the San Diego County Sheriff's Office not to release identifying information about domestic violence victims for the safety and well-being of the people involved.
