Search for Missing Juvenile Hiker in Lakes Basin Area 

October 22, 2024 – Plumas County Sheriff’s Office officials report that Plumas County Search and Rescue team personnel have located 16-year-old Camila ‘Mila’ Schweyer and are bringing her out of the area now to be evaluated by medical personnel. We will update you with more when we have it!

Original information: On Sunday night, just after 6:00 P.M., the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) received a report of a 16-year-old hiker who was overdue in the Lakes Basin area. The report was made by her mother, who had dropped her off for a hike near the Elwell Lodge in Plumas County.

A U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer promptly responded to the area and confirmed the location where the juvenile was dropped off. Plumas County Search and Rescue teams were activated, and a California Highway Patrol (CHP) Northern Air Operations Helicopter was requested and dispatched from Redding.

Despite extensive search efforts last night, crews were unable to locate the missing hiker.

This morning, search operations will continue in the area. A mutual aid request has been made to the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) for additional resources to assist in the search. CHP Air Operations are also returning this morning to aid in the efforts.

The missing juvenile is identified as Camila ‘Mila’ Schweyer, a 16-year-old Hispanic female, approximately 5 feet tall, weighing about 110 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a dark grey sweatshirt, black leggings, blue shoes, and she was carrying a light blue backpack. She was also hiking with a small chihuahua type dog.
