Sexual Assault in Encinitas
November 9, 2024 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Wednesday, November 6, just after 2:30 p.m., 
deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station responded to investigate a report of a sexual assault near the 600 block of 3rd Street in Encinitas.
The preliminary investigation indicated an unknown suspect approached a 17-year-old girl who was walking near the location. The suspect ordered her to walk to a nearby parking lot and forced her into a vehicle. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim and fled the scene.
Detectives from the Sheriff's Sexual Assault Unit responded and were able to quickly identify the suspect and his vehicle by using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology.
On Thursday, November 7, the San Diego Fugitive Task Force (FTF) arrested David Canfield (39) in the 6300 block of University Avenue in San Diego. He was arrested for kidnapping and various sexual assault charges.
