While we encourage biking in our bike-friendly city and want everyone to enjoy their rides safely, it’s critical to make sure your e-bike is legally permitted for street use. Brands like Sur-Ron, Talaria, and Toro Motors sell electric off-road dirt bikes designed only for off-road use.
These bikes:
Lack pedals
Can reach speeds of up to 68 MPH
Are NOT street legal on public roads
To legally ride an electric motorcycle on city streets, you must have:
A valid driver’s license with M1 endorsement
California vehicle registration
Insurance
Using these off-road bikes on public roads can be dangerous and significantly increase the risk of collisions. Please ride responsibly and ensure your bike is street-legal before taking it out on the road.
Stay safe, San Diego!
