March 14, 2025 – Ventura County Sheriff's Office officials report that on October 17, 2024, a heartwarming story unfolded in the city of Fillmore. Our deputy came across a family of eight, including young children and pets, who were without a home and uncertain of their next steps. This family had been displaced when the home they rented was flooded, leaving them in a state of stress and uncertainty.

The Homeless Liaison Unit (HLU), already in Fillmore offering services through a Backpack Medicine outreach, was promptly notified. With compassion and urgency, the HLU team diverted their attention to the family, learning about their situation and connecting them with vital county and veteran resources. Thanks to these efforts, the family was able to secure temporary shelter, providing them with a much-needed moment of relief.

Gold Coast Veterans and the HLU team continued to support the family, staying in touch and assisting with their needs until permanent housing became available in late December. For the parents, this was a massive weight lifted off their shoulders. For the children, it was a reassuring fresh start filled with new opportunities. With a safe and stable home, the family could finally focus on what mattered most: their future and rebuilding their lives together.

The Homeless Liaison Unit remains dedicated to improving lives and addressing homelessness by tirelessly working to find solutions. They encourage individuals facing or at risk of homelessness to trust law enforcement enough to reach out and utilize the many available resources.  Together, we can create more stories of hope and resilience, and pave the way for better days ahead for everyone.
