Hiker Located in Big Maria Mountain Range
March 16, 2025 – Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 8:56 p.m., deputies 
from the Colorado River Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a missing hiker in the Big Maria Mountains, near Powerline Road and Midland Road, in the unincorporated area near Blythe.
The missing hiker was identified as a 71-year-old woman from Trona, California. An experienced outdoorswoman, she had shared her planned route and location with a friend before embarking on her hike. Concerned after not hearing from her for approximately five hours, the friend contacted Riverside County Sheriff’s dispatch for assistance.
As nightfall approached, the hiker found herself low on water and still several hours from her vehicle. Deputies deployed a drone to aid in the search but could not locate her. Due to weather conditions, the department’s helicopter was unable to respond. Authorities then contacted the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit (RMRU) for assistance.
On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 7:50 a.m., RMRU successfully located the hiker in good condition. She did not require medical attention and returned to her vehicle without assistance. The hiker credited her preparedness for the successful outcome. She conserved water, did not hike after dark, and carried appropriate clothing and gear for an overnight stay.
This incident highlights the importance of proper preparation when hiking in remote areas.
The Riverside Sheriff’s Office reminds outdoor enthusiasts to always:
- Inform someone of their planned route and expected return time.
- Carry sufficient water for the duration of the hike.
- Wear and pack appropriate clothing for changing conditions.
- Be prepared for unexpected situations, including overnight stays.
