High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

April 22, 2025 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on April 17, SDPD Motor Officer Alex Chiappone was traveling northbound on I-15 when he encountered a minivan fully engulfed in flames on the shoulder of the freeway. Inside was a disabled woman, unable to escape on her own.

Without waiting for backup or protective gear, Officer Chiappone moved directly toward the burning car. Working alongside San Diego County Sheriff’s Captain John Malan, he entered the smoke-filled passenger compartment and helped pull the woman out through the sliding door—just moments before flames overtook the interior.

She was safely removed from the vehicle and later evaluated by paramedics. Thanks to their actions, she walked away without a single burn or injury.

Officer Chiappone’s response reflects the highest standards of service and professionalism we expect from those who wear the SDPD badge. We also extend our thanks to Captain Malan for his decisive action and partnership in saving a life.
