May 27, 2025 – San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on May 25, 2025, during regular cell checks, jail staff recognized an inmate was in medical distress. Custody and nursing staff immediately attempted to render medical aid and CPR.

The inmate identified as 59-year-old Brent Perucca of San Luis Obispo remained unresponsive and was pronounced deceased by paramedics at approximately 4:30 P.M.

Perucca was arrested by San Luis Obispo police on May 23, 2025, at approximately 12:40 P.M. Prior to booking he was taken to the hospital for medical clearance for chronic long term health issues. Perucca was at the hospital for several hours and received extensive testing and examination. Afterwards, he was booked into County Jail at approximately 6:00 P.M. He was screened by medical staff at the jail and continued receiving treatment for his health issues. Perucca had a long history of being booked into jail with more than 20 such occurrences.

An autopsy was performed this morning and the results are pending. No foul play is suspected.

Next of kin has been notified. No further information is available at this time.
