Arrest of suspect for unlawful storage of a firearm, child endangerment, and illegal weapons charges

May 29, 2025 – Ventura County Sheriff's Office officials report that Moorpark School Resource Officer, Moorpark Investigations Unit and Moorpark Special Enforcement Unit arrested a Moorpark resident for criminal storage of a firearm, child endangerment and various other firearm-related charges following an investigation of a student who brought a single round of ammunition to school.

On May 27, 2025, the Moorpark School Resource Officer responded to the Campus Canyon College Preparatory Academy regarding a student in possession of a single round of ammunition. The initial investigation revealed the student brought the ammunition from home to show friends at the school.

The Moorpark School Resource Officer, Moorpark Investigations Unit, Moorpark Special Enforcement Unit and a Detective assigned to the Gun Violence Reduction Program responded to assist with the investigation. During the investigation, detectives contacted the father of the student, Ricardo Nunez.

Detectives located two unregistered assault rifles, a handgun, ammunition and several high-capacity magazines at the residence, unsecured. The firearms and ammunition were all located in areas accessible to children. Detectives determined Nunez was the owner and/or person responsible for the firearms.

The Moorpark Police Department and Moorpark SRO have a great relationship with our local schools and parents. The Moorpark Police Department would like to remind families to ensure any firearms are secured properly. Store your gun safely and securely to prevent unauthorized use. Guns and ammunition should be stored separately. When the gun is not in your hands, you must still think of safety. Use a California-approved firearms safety device on the gun, such as a trigger lock or cable lock, so it cannot be fired. Store it unloaded in a locked container, such as a California-approved lock box or a gun safe. Store your gun in a different location from the ammunition. You should use a locking device and a storage container for maximum safety.
