June 18, 2025 – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on Tuesday morning, at approximately 2:20 a.m., off-duty Deputy Marcos Pena Jr. was involved in a fatal traffic collision on the northbound 101 Freeway in the North Hollywood area.

Our 31-year-old deputy was pronounced deceased on scene where he tragically passed away from his injuries.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic and untimely loss of Deputy Pena Jr., who was taken from us far too soon,” said Sheriff Robert G. Luna. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of serving alongside him.”

Deputy Pena joined the Department on July 14, 2022, and after completing the academy, Class #462, was assigned to Men’s Central Jail.

Deputy Pena is survived by his mother, Michelle Rubio and his stepfather, Deputy Albert Rubio, who is assigned to Court Services, his four stepsiblings, Diserre Rubio, Ashley Rubio, Albert Rubio, and Deja Rubio.

Currently, the California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
