July 10, 2025 – Grass Valley – Nevada County Sheriff’s Office officials report that an ongoing investigation into suspected illegal drug activity in Nevada County centered on a storage facility on Loma Rica Road in Grass Valley where 34-year-old Kalen Turner of Nevada City was rearrested on July 7 for various drug offenses, along with Maya Hylan, 25, of Nevada City, for similar drug charges, and Matthew Catania, 34, of Grass Valley, for an outstanding, misdemeanor drug-related warrant.
Prior to the July 7 arrests, Turner was most recently arrested on June 3 for possession of a controlled substance (including a sizeable amount of Fentanyl) with two or more prior convictions - 11395(b)(1) HS, which is the new violation under Proposition 36 passed by California voters in 2024.
As a suspected narcotics dealer, an ongoing investigation into Turner led deputies and detectives of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) to the Loma Rica Rd. storage facility, where Turner and Hylan were confirmed to be lessees on one storage unit.
NCSO K9 Riggs, who is Peace Officer Standards and Training certified in narcotics detection, was deployed to search the storage facility on July 2 and alerted his handler of suspected drugs at one specific unit, which was Turner’s and Hylan’s unit. A subsequent search warrant for the unit was obtained that same day and various drug paraphernalia and narcotics were located, including suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, among other drugs, as well as an abundance of ammunition. Evidence suggested ongoing drug sale activity as well as drug sales at the facility itself.
On July 7, NCSO deputies intercepted Turner and Hylan as they were leaving their storage unit and arrested them both without incident. Catania was also present and arrested for his outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
Turner’s new charges included: possession/purchase for sale narcotics – 11351 HS; possession of a controlled substance – 11350(A) HS; possession of unlawful paraphernalia – 11364(A) HS; possession of a controlled substance with two prior convictions – 11395(b)(1) HS; being a prohibited person from owning ammunition – 30305(A)(1); transporting or selling narcotics – 11352(A); felony offense for which a person has been released from custody on bail or on his or her own recognizance prior to the judgment becoming final – 12022.1 PC; using a leased space to sell controlled substances - 11355.5(B); and for being an unlawful person to use or possess tear gas (pepper spray) – 22810(A).
Maya Hylan’s charges included: possession/purchase for sale narcotics – 11351 HS; using a leased space to sell controlled substances - 11355.5(B); possession of a controlled substance – 11350(A) HS; possession of unlawful paraphernalia – 11364(A) HS; felony offense for which a person has been released from custody on bail or on his or her own recognizance prior to the judgment becoming final – 12022.1 PC; and for being an unlawful person to use or possess tear gas (pepper spray) – 22810(A).
