July 23, 2025 – Nevada City, CA – Nevada County Sheriff’s Office officials report that a father and son unexpectedly came across human remains on the afternoon of July 21, prompting a death investigation by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO). The duo was out recreating and traveling down Banner Quaker Hill Road in Nevada City, a lengthy paved road that turns into a dirt, fire-access road, when they spotted human remains on the side of the dirt road and immediately called 911 for help.

NCSO deputies and detectives responded and confirmed the remains were in fact human as suspected. However, due to the level of decomposition, a positive identification of the remains has not yet been made, nor has a cause of death been confirmed.

The remains were transported to Placer County Morgue where they are scheduled to undergo formal autopsy on July 29 for potential identification and cause of death. Following next of kin notification, an update will be released to the public.
