Safeway Suspect Stopped
August 3, 2025 – Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office officials report that a suspected thief quickly exited the Safeway store on Homestead Road in City of Cupertino, riding off on a bicycle with three backpacks and two shopping bags on July 21. Deputy Curtis Jr. stopped 32-year-old Tyler Jones for riding without a light in the dark. Jones admitted he thought he was being stopped because Safeway employees suspected him of stealing.
A search found 21 bottles of probiotics, dental products, and medications worth $1,500 that Jones said he planned to resell in San Francisco. He had stolen the items from several stores, including CVS Pharmacy in Campbell and Walgreens in San Jose.
Deputies also found two pipes used to smoke fentanyl. Jones had active warrants out of Napa and Shasta counties for theft and probation violations. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on organized retail theft and drug paraphernalia charges.
Great work, Deputy Curtis Jr!
