In-Custody Death
August 5, 2025 – Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 8:29 p.m., deputies from the Larry
D. Smith Correctional Facility were alerted to an inmate having a medical emergency in a housing unit cell. Custody staff and jail medical personnel immediately responded and administered emergency medical assistance. Paramedics responded to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility, and the inmate was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
At the hospital, the inmate’s health continued to decline. Hospital medical staff performed life-saving measures. However, his condition did not improve, and he was ultimately pronounced deceased by attending hospital physicians.
Investigators from The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Corrections Central Investigations, responded and assumed the investigation. The inmate has been identified as 31-year-old Christopher Martinez of Norwalk.
