Success Story: A Gift on Two Wheels

September 14, 2025 – Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office officials report that a young boy in San Jose’s Burbank neighborhood was all smiles after receiving a brand-new bicycle thanks to the kindness and quick thinking of a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputy.

Deputy Harvey responded to a theft report this summer at an apartment complex near Leigh Avenue and Scott Street. When he arrived, he was greeted by 9-year-old Christopher, who explained that his bicycle had been stolen overnight. Despite locking it up outside, the bike had vanished by morning.

“We never know what kinds of calls we’re going to get, but I always look at each one as a puzzle that needs solving,” said Deputy Harvey. “I thought about the solution and told Christopher, ‘I might be able to get you a new bike.’”

Deputy Harvey wasn’t just making a promise – he had a plan. For years, he has helped organize a holiday event called “Sheriff Clause,” which brings joy and gifts to hundreds of children. Through that initiative, he built a partnership with Community Cycles of California, a local organization that donates bicycles to those in need.

After a quick phone call, Harvey secured a brand-new bike for Christopher and returned a few days later to deliver it in person.

Christopher’s face lit up with excitement as he received the surprise gift and eagerly prepared to take it for a spin. For Deputy Harvey, the moment was about more than just a bicycle — it reflected his commitment to community policing.

“Being able to do something for him to make it right — it feels good,” Harvey said. “Growing up, I didn’t have a lot. Now, as a deputy, I’m in a position to give back to those who are less fortunate.”
