Suspect Barricades Himself after Firing Gun at Deputies in La Puente
September 18, 2025 – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on Thursday, September 11,
2025, suspect Juan Carlos Alvarez’ ankle monitor transmitted a tampering alarm indicating he cut it off. An arrest warrant was issued for PC 5532 (b)(1) – Escape from Electronic Confinement.
Alvarez was previously sentenced to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Work Release Program/Electronic Confinement in July 2025, for violation of PC 30305(A)(1) – Prohibited from Possessing Ammunition and was fitted with an ankle monitor.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at about 10:18 a.m., deputies from the Electronic Confinement Division, and the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department attempted to serve the arrest warrant on Alvarez. Deputies arrived at a residence in La Puente and contacted Alvarez who fired a gun at deputies and barricaded himself inside his home. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT team also responded to assist and, after a brief standoff, took Alvarez into custody.
The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors authorizes the Sheriff to administer a Work Release program. While providing manual labor to improve or maintain public facilities, inmates may re-establish ties with their family, return to work with their previous employers, while serving the community on their non-scheduled workdays. Inmates who have been sentenced to Work Release by the courts also have the option of participating in Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center's Electronic Confinement Program (ECP). It is the duty of the Work Release division to ensure that all commitments are held accountable to all California State Laws while participating in the program to provide safety and security for the community.
