LASD Homicide Announces $10,000 Reward in Juan Luis Marquez Murder Case 

September 19, 2025 – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials report that the Homicide Bureau held a press conference on Thursday on the murder of 41-year-old Juan Luis Marquez. Lieutenant Steve De Jong, lead investigators, and County officials announced a $10,000 reward approved by Supervisor Holly Mitchell and the Board of Supervisors.

On August 16, 2025, deputies found Mr. Marquez and his son shot in an alley off South Hooper Avenue in unincorporated South Los Angeles. His son survived; Mr. Marquez died at the scene. The two had confronted three Black juveniles trying to steal their vehicle when one opened fire. Mr. Marquez returned fire before four suspects fled in a red or burgundy Kia K5.

Detectives released video images of the vehicle, believed to have gunfire damage, and one of the suspects may have been wounded. Mr. Marquez, a husband, father of four, and family patriarch, was described as hardworking and devoted. His grieving family did not appear on camera. Investigators urge anyone with information to come forward.

LASD Homicide Lieutenant Steve De Jong and the Homicide Bureau are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the suspect(s) involved in the murder of Juan Luis Marquez.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has authorized a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
