January 11, 2026 – San Diego County District Attorney DA Summer Stephan announced that a grand jury has indicted
21 defendants for conspiring to engage in highly dangerous street racing, illegal speed contests, and reckless driving on public highways across San Diego County. These crimes—often fueled by thrill-seeking and social media notoriety—put innocent lives at serious risk.
This case is the result of a strong, coordinated collaboration with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP), along with multiple regional law enforcement partners, all working together to stop illegal street racing and reduce deaths and injuries on our roadways.
Investigators found that racers coordinated through social media, modified high-performance vehicles, and raced at speeds exceeding 100 mph—sometimes reaching 150–160 mph—on Interstates 8, 805, 15, SR-94, and rural mountain roads. These illegal events were filmed and posted online, despite the devastating consequences street racing has had in our region, including six fatalities and numerous injuries in the past four years.
“Racing at extreme speeds with reckless disregard for families on our roadways is a recipe for catastrophe,” said DA Stephan. “This indictment sends a clear message: illegal street racing will not be tolerated, and offenders will be held accountable.”
As part of the investigation, 16 vehicles were seized, including Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs, Corvettes, and a McLaren. The arrests reflect a united commitment by the DA’s Office, SDPD, CHP, and partner agencies to protect the public and keep San Diego roads safe.
Arraignments are scheduled for January 12, 13, and 15 at the downtown courthouse.
