In-Custody Death 

January 15, 2026 – Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on January 13, 2026, deputies from the Cois Byrd Detention Center discovered an inmate experiencing what appeared to be a medical emergency inside one of the day rooms. Corrections staff and jail medical personnel immediately administered medical aid, supported by responding paramedics. The inmate was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The inmate was identified as Joel Rodriguez, a 38-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore.

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Central Investigations Bureau and the Coroner’s Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. There were no signs of foul play at the scene. Rodriguez’ family has been notified of his death.
