March 15, 2026 – San Diego County District Attorney’s Office officials report a terrifying tech scam is costing victims thousands—even millions—of dollars.

It often starts with a fake Microsoft pop-up, then escalates into a sophisticated scheme where scammers impersonate government agents and convince victims to buy gold to “protect” their money.

In San Diego, investigators have arrested more than 40 couriers connected to these crimes, yet scammers continue targeting seniors and stealing life savings.
