SDPD In-Custody Death – 5000 Block of Newport Ave., in San Diego 

Investigation into an In-Custody Death involving the San Diego Police Department 

March 17, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that the Homicide Unit is investigating an in-custody death that occurred the morning of March 16, 2026, in the Ocean Beach community of San Diego.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., San Diego Police Department officers contacted an adult male inside a vehicle in the 5000 block of Newport Avenue. During the detention, the male became combative. As officers attempted to handcuff him, he produced a handgun and shot himself one time. Officers immediately rendered medical aid and requested paramedics. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers discharged their weapons. Both officers sustained minor injuries. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Homicide Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
