April 25, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials report that the Homicide Unit responded to an officer‑involved san diego county sheriff department logoshooting that occurred on the afternoon of April 15, 2026, in the East Village neighborhood of the city of San Diego.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., San Diego Police Department officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the intersection of 16th Street and Island Avenue. Callers reported that an adult female was actively stabbing an adult male.

Officers arrived within minutes and issued commands for the suspect to drop the object she was holding. The suspect advanced toward the officers, and additional commands were given for her to drop the object. One San Diego Police officer discharged multiple rounds, striking the suspect. The suspect was also tased during the incident.

Officers immediately provided medical aid and requested paramedics. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where she was treated for non‑life‑threatening injuries.

No San Diego Police Department officers were injured during the incident. The victim of the assault did not sustain injuries. The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old, Denise Guzman, a resident of San Diego County.  Ms. Guzman was booked at Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility for assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been identified as Yand Grijalva. Officer Grijalva has been with the San Diego Police Department for over six years, and he is assigned to patrol at the Central Division.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is conducting the officer‑involved shooting investigation. At this stage, the motivation and circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation. Detectives are gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining all aspects of the event.

The investigative and review process for officer‑involved shootings is comprehensive. Once the Homicide Unit concludes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the officer bears any criminal liability. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review into the officer's discharge of the firearm.
