In-Custody Death 

April 28, 2026 – Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Sunday, April 26, 2026, deputies from the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility were alerted to an inmate who was choking on food inside a housing unit. Corrections staff and jail medical personnel immediately responded to the housing unit and administered medical aid. Responding Paramedics assumed life-saving measures, but the inmate, identified as Robert Wayne Shingleton, a 48-year-old resident of Aguanga, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators from the Riverside Sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigations Bureau and the Coroner’s Bureau responded and assumed the investigation. Shingleton’s family has been notified of his death.
