Reckless Evading in Encinitas
May 15, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials report that a suspect has been arrested after a
months-long investigation into a reckless evading incident in Encinitas.
On February 4, 2026, just before 4:30 p.m., a deputy from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station attempted to conduct a traffic stop on an e-motorcycle that was being illegally driven on the roadway in the 200 block of North El Camino Real. When the deputy activated their overhead emergency lights, the driver of the e-motorcycle fled in a reckless manner, crossing into oncoming lanes of traffic, speeding, and performing stunts while fleeing.
Due to the e-motorcycle driver's reckless driving, as well as the danger posed to the public, the deputy called off the pursuit. The driver continued their reckless behavior and was eventually able to evade a Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter. A short time later, the e-motorcycle was found abandoned in Carlsbad.
After a nearly three-month investigation, the suspect was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile in Encinitas.
On Wednesday, May 13, around 4:30 p.m., deputies and detectives from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station contacted the juvenile suspect at his home. He was placed under arrest for a violation of California Vehicle Code 2800.2 – Evading a Peace Officer with Disregard for Public Safety.
